Amy Schwartz, author of "What James Likes Best," published by Richard Jackson Books / Atheneum, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and edited by Richard Jackson, is the seventh annual winner of the Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding writing in a picture book, given by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The award presentation will be made in May 2004.

"What James Likes Best" is told in four short chapters, each one centering on a family outing, described from a toddler's perspective. Amy Schwartz ingeniously uses repetition and predictable structures in conjunction with unique, engaging details from a young child's familiar world. At the end of each chapter, she asks, "And what do you think James liked best?" and offers a visual reprise of some of the things James encountered, extending an open invitation for young children to interact with the story by answering for James, or naming their own favorite aspects of the little boy's outings.

The award committee named five Honor Books: "The Baby Goes Beep" written by Rebecca O'Connell and illustrated by Ken Wilson-Max, edited by Deborah Brodie and published by Deborah Brodie / Roaring Brook Press, a division of Millbrook Press; "Calabash Cat and His Amazing Journey" by James Rumford, edited by Kate O'Sullivan and published by Houghton Mifflin; "Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile" written by Won-Ldy Paye and Margaret H. Lippert and illustrated by Julie Paschkis, edited by Reka Simonsen and published by Henry Holt; "Tippy-Toe Chick, Go!" written by George Shannon and illustrated by Laura Dronzek, edited by Virginia Duncan and published by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins; and "Two Old Potatoes and Me" written by John Coy and illustrated by Carolyn Fisher, edited by Nancy Hinkel and published by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House.

Established in 1998, the award honors the work of Charlotte Zolotow, a distinguished children's book editor for 38 years with Harper Junior Books, and author of more than 70 picture books, including such classic works as
"Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" (Harper, 1962) and "William's Doll"
(Harper, 1972). Ms. Zolotow attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison on a writing scholarship from 1933 to 1936 where she studied with Professor Helen C. White. The award is given for outstanding writing in a picture book for children in the birth through seven age range.

The award committee also cited nine titles as Highly Commended: "Baby Radar" by Naomi Shihab Nye (Greenwillow Books / HarperCollins), "Buster" by Denise Fleming (Henry Holt), "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems (Hyperion), "George Washington's Teeth" by Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), "Mama's Coming Home" by Kate Banks (Frances Foster Books/Farrar, Straus and Giroux), "Mary Smith" by Andrea U'Ren (Farrar, Straus and Giroux),
"Snow Music" by Lynne Rae Perkins (Greenwillow Books / HarperCollins),
