I also loved this book, but since I went on and on when discussing my favorites of the year I wasn't going to chime in this time, but I wanted to add a personal note to Hollis' comments:
"Well, folks around here are likely getting tired of my A Northern Light obsession. But if I were back in a HS classroom, I would not hesitate to make this THE book around which to base all other novel units." I wholeheartedly agree. It offers so many opportunities for discussion- from the choices M makes to the wonderful historical detail. Using this book along with "A Place in the Sun," "An American Tragedy" and "Murder in the Adirondacks" (a thoroughly researched account of the Chester Gilette trial with excerpts from the letters as well as newspaper accounts and court documents) would be an interesting opportunity to explore the portrayals of a single and particular event. I know that this can be accomplished with other events and titles, but I think that the number of issues of the time that are woven throughout Northern Light make it an exceptional example. The Ms. Wilcox character alone could spark a great many discussions. Ok, I'll stop now, except to say that for many reasons, I too am fascinated with this book. Genevieve
