Here is something from "Stories Behind the Book", which appeared in Publishers Weekly on 10/22/2001 (pp. 24():
"In many ways, it is the book Taylor has felt most compelled to write. Even before she began her Newbery Medal--winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
(1976), she had attempted to write her great-grandparents' story but, she says, 'It wasn't coming; it wasn't right.'" It sounds to me like Mildred Taylor wanted to write The_Land for the longest time, but she's just not going to put something out here or there that isn't just so. She brings the perfect gift. Meg WI
