As we enter the second half of February, it's time to shift the CCBC-Net discussion to the 2004 Printz Award and Honor books.
Angela Johnson's THE FIRST PART LAST (Simon & Schuster) was the 2004 winner of the Printz Award, in addition to winning the 2004 Coretta Scott King Author Award. This short novel portrays a 16-year-old father, overwhelmed with love for his infant daughter and overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for her. What did you appreciate about THE FIRST PART LAST? Have you shared it with young adult readers, and if so, what was their response?
And, what would you like to say about the four Printz Award honor books? They are:
A NORTHERN LIGHT: A NOVEL by Jennifer Donnelly (Harcourt)
KEESHA'S HOUSE by Helen Frost (Frances Foster Books / Farrar, Straus and Giroux)
FAT KID RULES THE WORLD by K.L. Going (Putnam)
THE EARTH, MY BUTT AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS by Carolyn Mackler
(Candlewick)
