The Vermont Center for the Book is sponsoring its first summer institute for the Beyond Difference program at Lake Morey Inn and Resort (Fairlee, Vermont) from July 7-9, 2004. The keynote speaker is E.B. Lewis and there will be a special visit from Hazel Rochman. Contact melindau at vermontbook.org

Beyond Difference Summer Institute 2004: Using Picture Books to Introduce Diversity Across the Elementary Curriculum Beyond Difference uses the art and story of quality picture books to engage students in dynamic discussions and has been used by hundreds of educators to meet national and state standards in multiple areas including:
language and literacy
social studies
mathematics
science
character development and
diversity awareness Beyond Difference books reflect a diversity of race, ethnicity, culture, age, physical abilities, gender, religion, family, class, work experience and personal characteristics. The books address themes that spark conversations tying the story to children?s lives, to the world, to the curriculum.
