IBBY CONGRESS TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY
Consider attending the IBBY Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, Sept. 5-9, 2004.
Information about the IBBY Congress can be found at the IBBY Congress website http://www.sacbf.org.za/ , or you may contact Jay Heale, South African Children's Book Forum (SACBF), P.O. Box 847, Howard Place - 7450 South Africa; Tel. +2721 - 532 05 55 Fax 671 29 02; E-mail: sacbf at worldonline.co.za . For general questions about the Congress, you may contact IBBY Administrative Director (Basel, Switzerland) Elizabeth Page ibby at ibby.org or USBBY staff persons Alida Cutts acutts at reading.org and/or Barbara Miriello bmiriello at reading.org . The registration deadline is April 1.
Here's an economical way to travel to South Africa. (This information is also attached as a Word doc.) For a $100 deposit, you can arrange to travel to/from South Africa with Anne Pellowski, a world traveler and experienced participant in countless previous IBBY Congresses. The rate for this itinerary will be approximately $1,300. The schedule: Leave from NYC* on August 27 for Johannesburg. On Sept. 4 leave Jo'burg for Cape Town. Leave Cape Town for NYC* on Sept. 10.
The airfare for each person in the group includes the stop in Jo'burg and the on-going fare to Cape Town. Other expenses will be approximately
$500 for the full week prior to the IBBY Congress for hotels, meals, and bus travel to the Venda and Sotho areas. The full payment is due June 27.
Each person is responsible for arranging and paying costs of connecting flights to/from NYC.* Individual cancellation is possible until July 27, but there will be a $150 fee. (If there is not a minimum of ten travelers, the group will be canceled 90 days prior to departure, and the deposit will be fully refunded.) Travel insurance is a consideration. No free fares are allowed, and Anne will pay for the flights just like everyone else.
Options about how to spend the week prior to the IBBY Congress include:
# 1 - Going with Anne to the workshops she leads in Thohoyandu: Aug. 291 and Polokwane (Pietersburg): Sept. 1-3. No one will be required to observe or participate in Anne's workshops about making cloth books. However, if you're interested, find out more from Anne.
# 2 - Being a tourist on your own during that week and visiting places such as the Kruger Game Park. You will make your own arrangements. Most travel guides sold in the U.S. contain information about side trips. Anne can provide contact information for travel agents in that region.
Some individuals will prefer to participate in the official post-Congress tour, or travel in other ways after the IBBY Congress ends. All costs associated with post-Congress activities will be extra. For an additional $100, it's possible to return from Cape Town on Sept. 15 and still be considered part of the original group. No deviation is allowed on the outgoing trip.
FYI: The cheapest [individual] rate quoted to Anne by Northwest-KLM and Delta-South African Airways to Anne was $2,200, and that did not include a stop in Johannesburg. One of the Northwest-KLM group rates quoted in November takes almost a full day longer because one must fly first to Amsterdam. Anne is making plans with Delta and South African Airways.
Vera B. Williams, Malore Brown, Marilyn Hollinshead & Ginny Moore Kruse are among the 12 people who have already made plans to travel with Anne a week early and then attend the IBBY Congress.
If you wish to travel with Anne's group, send a deposit check to Anne Pellowski as soon as possible, but no later than March 1. Along with the check for your $100 deposit, send Anne information about your preferred days of travel & length of stay. You must decide upon one of the options for the first week no later than March 1.
Anne's address for U.S. mail is: 819 West Broadway, Winona, MN 55987. Write an e-mail message to Anne, or telephone her (507E4u84, evenings) with your questions. When you write an e-mail message to Anne arpell6 at aol.com, put SOUTH AFRICA IBBY in the Subject Line of your message.
* It's possible that the U.S. city for departure/arrival will be Atlanta, rather than NYC.
