A Northern Light

I also thought A Northern Light was an exceptionally well-written book. I found Mattie's life painfully confining, almost to the point where I wanted to stop reading. Mattie isn't a plucky heroine constantly railing against her lot; in fact, on and off throughout the story she is resigned to her fate as a farmer's daughter and future wife. That's not a criticism; her world is very convincing, and her outlook is probably more realistic than that of Catherine (Called Birdy), for instance. It just made me claustrophobic, and it was hard work for me to finish the book. Has anyone heard any feedback from teens who have read A Northern Light? Did they also want to yell at Mattie to steal the money if she had to, to do anything but stay in the mountains?
