Jonathan, I appreciated your comments about the then / now narrative structure.
The Printz Award winner, First Part Last, used this technique brilliantly, building the narrative tension to a perfect conclusion
(that was also the story's beginning). The two strands of narrative were woven together into a perfect whole, and the expert pacing was what made it work.
It must have been such an interesting committee discussion, to be able to compare and contrast two books that use the same narrative device but are so different from each other.
