Olive's Ocean

Two of our 6th grade (11 years old) girls spoke glowingly about Olive's Ocean yesterday. Here's some of what they had to say:
"It was really interesting."
"I couldn't put it down."
"The ending was good even though it left you with lots of questions and I don't usually like those kind of endings."
"It should definitely be a TAB Pick." (one of the top ten choices of their school's reading group)
"It was very well-written."
"It really shows Martha's feelings."
"It has a lot in common with Sun & Spoon." When I lived in Wisconsin, I was never surprised that Madison-area young people appreciated the quiet, introspective, writing in Henkes's novels, which often have--to me--a Midwestern flavor (those based in Madison make me very homesick). I am constantly amazed that his novels also enjoy a following of young readers here in Arlington, a community that is very diverse and increasingly urban. I must always remind myself that good writing is its own appeal and to never underestimate the understanding of our young readers.
