I agree with Kelley's sentiment to a certain degree re the responses of children and the "value" of a book.
However, I still believe that as grown-ups and committee members who have read hundreds, if not thousands, of children's books, who are passionate about advocating quality literature for children, and who are willing to volunteer huge chunks of their personal time to make recommended lists and award selections, are burdened, extremely happily, with the important mission (and not just "good intentions") to set the trend and to inform and even educate the public -- teachers, librarians, parents, and children alike.
No matter what we think is the Value of Depereaux or any other title, the fact remains that this Gold Medal is the only proven token that ensures LONG and REPLEATED print runs.
Not only that it generates income for the authors to continue their endeavor in creating more quality books for children; it also sends messages and sets trends for the ever-audience-mindful publishing industry.
Without this medal, or published lists, or grown-ups' guiding hands, many children will not have had the chance to even encounter the books that they might fall in love with. So, I say, do pay attention to and do mind and do value these adults' efforts in diving into the vast deep sea of each year's children's new publications to retrieve those pearls that will shine for a long time....
