Tim Ditlow, the publisher of Listening Library, asked me to post the following:

Dear CCBC-net members,

I'd like to offer a few thoughts in response to Nick Glass's recent post, which I read with great interest.

He raised an excellent question about the text change from "Dear Reader? to
?Dear Listener" in The Tale of Despereaux audiobook production, and I'd like to attempt to answer it.

Listening Library's executive producers and freelance directors always consult with an author before a recording takes place, and as publisher all decisions of this nature are discussed with me prior to the studio sessions.

After several discussions with Kate DiCamillo we came to the conclusion that listeners might well find it strange to be addressed as "reader" while listening, even if they were following along with the text. Any text change from the original book is given careful consideration? Listening Library has been producing unabridged children?s audiobooks for almost fifty years and we know that many of our younger listeners do follow along faithfully with the book. However, we occasionally make these types of small changes to keep to the integrity of an audiobook production, and again, all of these changes are approved by the author.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to address this aspect of audiobook recordings.

Tim Ditlow,

Publisher, Listening Library
