One I've been meaning to add to the list is "In the Keep of Time" by Margaret Anderson. It's a terrific story based around Smailholm Tower, an old tower (keep) in Scotland. Four children go to stay with an older relative/acquaintance and discover that entering the tower and using a key can bring them backward and forwards in time. However, the youngest child gets trapped in the past and somehow becomes a child of that time; her older siblings have to kidnap her and reacclimate her to modern life. There are two other books in the series which I haven't read--"In the Circle of Time" and "In the Mists of Time".
I think the original email requested books for middle grades, so this suggestion may be a bit young, but Edward Eager's "The Time Garden" is also great. Children staying with an elderly relative (common theme, huh?) discover that with the help of the thyme in the herb garden and a creature called the Natterjack, they can go back in time. They meet the main characters of "Little Women", as well as their own parents when they were children (overlap with another Eager classic, "Magic by the Lake"). I believe almost all of Eager's books have been reissued with new illustrations by N.M. Bodecker, so this title shouldn't be hard to find.
