January 2004

January 1: National Book Award Winner and Nominees. In late November, The Canning Season by Polly Horvath was named the winner of the National Book Award in the young people's literature category. Through January 12, we'll discuss The Canning Season and the other nominees for the National Book Award for youth: Breakout by Paul Fleischman; An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 by Jim Murphy; The River Between Us by Richard Peck; and Locomotion by Jacqueline Woodson.

January 12: ALA Award Announcment: Initial Reactions. The American Library Association 2004 children's and young adult literature awards will be announced on Monday, January 12. Throughout this week, we invite your initial responses to news of what won the Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre, Batchelder, Printz, and Sibert awards.

January 19-January 31: 2004 Caldecott Winner and Honor Books. This is the time we will launch into an in?pth discussion of the 2004 Caldecott Medal winner and honor books, chosen as the most distinguished illustration in picture books for children published in 2003.

February, 2004

February 1: 2004 Newbery Winner and Honor Books. During the first two weeks of February, we invite you to discuss the 2004 Newbery winner and honor books, recognized for the most distinguished writing for children published in 2003.

February 15): 2004 Printz Award and Honor Books: We'll spend the second two weeks in Feburary looking at the winner and honor books for the Michael Printz award for literary excellence in publishing for young adults during 2003.

March 2004
