I would like to clarify some points I made --
I never meant to "accuse" anyone or any list of doing something wrong to leave Despereaux out. However, like Connie and Susan both mentioned that serious discussions do go into making such decisions, as much for what titles are included as for what are left out, there must be ample reasons for the "not inclusion" by ample number of people who are passionate children's literature experts. Those reasons are what I want to explore -- to be educated, to broaden my own view, if you might say. Having served on various Notables committees and the Newbery, I know from experience that the Committees are always serious and there are always going to be some disappointed people who question the "WHY" and "HOW" of each decision. I don't see that as a challenge to the Committee's integrity. Rather, I think of it as a wonderful way to deepen understandings over books we all feel strongly about.
Of course, if the purpose of our discourse here this week on CCBC-NET is only for praising the titles honored, then, I am at wrong to even raise these questions, and no one should answer my query. Forgive my transgression :)
