I agree with both of you. It really bothers me when people look at art in picture books or elsewhere and their critique includes something to the effect of "I/a 2 year old/my neighbor's dog could draw/paint/create something better." Perhaps they could, but in most cases we haven't seen evidence of it, so we can't judge their work. In addition, I believe that the ability to portray emotion through simple illustrations is far more difficult than with finely detailed ones. Both the Pigeon and Ella Sarah Gets Dressed (my personal favorite) do this so well and I am so glad that they were recognized for it.
