"Dear Reader" in DESPEREAUX

The DIckens reference I picked up from Kate DiCamillo's NPR interview had to do with telling a good story, not with character development and relationships.

Here as best as I can tell from my notes is what she said

"I read Dickens because he knows so well how to tell a story." Then I believe she went on to say that she learned the following from Dickens
"Make them laugh, make them cry, make them wait" Then she went on to talk about the power of story and its ability to evoke emotions.

It has been a while, so if you want to listen to the interview, it is (or was recently) still on line at Minnesota Public Radio.

The interview is available at http://news.mpr.org/programs/midmorning/listings/mm20031013.shtml

But be prepared for an extremely annoying (to me) interviewer who insists on mispronouncing Despereaux, despite how Kate DiCamillo ways she prefers it. ( I'm not sure I could have been as tolerant about it as Kate DiCamillo was.
