I totally agree with Dean. In addition to all of the books that made the various awards lists, it's interesting to note that of the five periodicals I cross-referenced their Best of the Year lists - Book Links, Booklist, Horn Book, Publisher's Weekly, School Library Journal - only two books made 4 out of the 5 lists. Those were the picture book George Washington's Teeth by Deborah Chandra & Madeleine Comora and In Defense of Liberty:the Story of America's Bill of Rights by Russell Freedman.

My perspective on book awards is that the list -- be it Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, Coretta Scott King, Book Links' Lasting Connections, Kirkus Review's Editor's Choice, Horn Book's Fanfare, or Booklist's Editors' Choice -- is a selection that REPRESENTS the many wonderful books out there. No one list is definitive, and l feel lucky to be part of such a rich world of children's literature, full of fine books that have been reviewed well.
I loved Despereaux and Olive's Ocean and An American Plague. All are great Newbery picks as far as I'm concerned. But I also loved Richard Peck's The River Between Us, Spinelli's Milkweed, Tracy Mack's Birdland, Deborah Hopkinson's Shutting Out the Sky, Horvath's The Canning Season, Paul Fleischman's Breakout, Will Moses's Mother Goose, and many others. All of these show up on one list or another. It's a lot of fun to compare the various lists and see where personal favorites are recognized.
I have great respect for the knowledge and passion of people who are on the award committees, for the editors of the journals, for all in this world of books who read widely, share their critical judgments, and promote good books.
There are already some excellent books of 2004: Lois Lowry's Messenger, E.L. Konigsburg's The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place, a picture book titled Circle Unbroken by Margot Theis Raven/illus. by E.B. Lewis.......
Happy Reading,
