"Dear Reader" convention in The Tale of Despereaux

Happily, I was in the process of reading THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX to my 6th graders at the time of the award announcement. I confess that every time I came to the phrase "dear reader" I thought about changing it -- but didn't. My students were drawn in as if they were reading it themselves. They responded audibly when appropriate and were totally engaged. They cheered and booed and worried and applauded. The style worked its magic, just as Eliza described.
Many adults have commented on what a pleasure this is for reading aloud. The opportunity for play with character's voices, the rising and falling of tension, the short chapters and interesting language -- all make this as much a treat for the adult reader as the child. It deserves the attention it will get with this award.
