I too applaud the choice of "The Tale of Despereaux." Since I am older than probably 90% of the rest of you, I will point out that the story's "intrusive author" took me back to my childhood when it was reassuring to be addressed by the author and to know that no matter how perilous the situation in the book I could count on that benign voice to take me safely to a happy ending. Surely children today in an even more insecure world deserve and will welcome that same kind of reassurance. And what fun to see a writer share her love of words with young readers. So much better than vocabulary lists where the student has words thrown at him as if he were a batter in a batting cage.

"Everything, as you well know (having lived in this world long enough to have figured out a thing or two for yourself), cannot always be sweetness and light." But if Despereaux can survive, so can we.
