If you go to tm you will see THE CANNING SEASON listed as a 2004 ALA Best Book for Young Adults.
(It is a Farrar Straus & Giroux book.)

I didn't see the Canning Season on a Best Books for Young Adults list. It was however on Horn Book Fanfare, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly Best Books for Children. It was also recommended on the new Kirkus Editor's Choice list.
