More Mock Newbery Results/Nonfiction Books

Concerning the lack of nonfiction titles on mock Newbery lists, our final book list is determined by our students. I draw up a list of possible books from other mock Newbery lists, and I look at books that have received starred reviews from various journals, especially books that have received more than one starred review. That list will be about 30P titles long. Our group then researches those titles, reading professional reviews, book summaries, and personal reviews. From this they then choose the ones they want to read.

There are nonfiction books on the list, I make sure of that, but they rarely get a second look from the kids once they realize they are nonfiction. Why? I'll ask them on Monday...
