Please excuse the cross posting. The Johnson County Library, in suburban Kansas City, held its annual Mock Caldecott today. There were 38 staff and guests present. Guests included staff from Kansas City Public Library, Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, and Anitra Steele, Mid-Continent Public Library and current member of the Caldecott committee.
It is perhaps not surprising that our Mock Caldecott Award went to Kansas City's favorite son, Brad Sneed, for his book AESOP'S FABLES, published by Dial Books for Young Readers. The voting was not just based on our fondness for Sneed as an author, illustrator and all around good guy. We felt that this book is definitely Caldecott material. His illustrations show a vibrancy and creativity that not only bring the stories to life but that extend the stories through the artwork. This is his best work yet!
Our honor book was SNOW MUSIC by Lynne Rae Perkins, published by Greenwillow. We felt that the reader is drawn into the scenes through a perfect blending of the illustrations and the text.
Other books that made our "short list" were: BLUES JOURNEY by Walter Dean Myers, illus. by Christopher Myers CREATION by Gerald McDermott HOW I BECAME A PIRATE by Melinda Long, illus. by David Shannon M IS FOR MUSIC by Kathleen Krull, illus. by Stacy Innerst MAN WHO WALKED BETWEEN THE TOWERS by Mordicai Gerstein RHYOLITE: THE TRUE STORY OF A GHOST TOWN by Diane Siebert, illus. by David Frampton RISE THE MOON by Eileen Spinelli, illus. by Raul Colon SILENT MOVIE by Avi, illus. by C.B. Mordan SOMEONE SAYS by Carole Lexa Schaefer, illus. by Pier Morgan THE STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO by Helen Bannerman, illus. by Christopher Bing Z GOES HOME by Jon Agee
Now we will get busy reading our Newbery nominations for our Mock Newbery which will be held after Christmas!
