I echo Kelly Michaelis' enthusiasm for Keeper of the Night by Kimberly Willis Holt and am delighted to hear her students appreciate this unusual book. The voice of Isabel, who tells the story, is a big departure from Holt's earlier novels. The setting, Guam, is both unusal and unforgettable.
Another favorite- The Tale of Despereaux. Talk about departure from voice, theme, setting-- Kate DiCamillo has really scored this time. Love this book, as do the kids I've shared it with.
