I concur with Merri Lindgren's recommendation of AFTER THE LAST DOG DIED. Douglas Mawson's incredible Antarctic survival story has been told through his journals and memorably, for adults, by Lennard Bickel in MAWSON'S WILL (1977), but Carmen Bredeson and the design team at National Geographic have done a wonderful job of bringing the "True-life, Hair-raising Adventure of Douglas Mason and His 191114 Antarctic Expedition" to young people. This subtitle is not hyperbole.
As Bredeson indicates, Mawson was one of the outstanding polar explorers, but he was first and foremost a scientist. What a great way to share with a younger audience the adventure and the great risk of science on the edge!
