My favorite books of 2003

I enjoyed many of the titles that have already been mentioned: City of Ember, Gregor the Overlander, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Diary of a Wombat, A Northern Light and others whose titles escape my frozen brain this morning. One title that I don't think has been mentioned yet is Cynthia Rylant's God Went to Beauty School, I loved how clever and funny it was- I also love when I wander past the YA area and hear snipits being read aloud to friends and parents! I also think that Safari Journal by Hudson Talbott is great- it's got mystery, adventure, and wild animals along with photographs and drawings that bring the story to life (although the hand-written style may be difficult for some readers). The last not-yet-mentioned title I'll add is Ghost Girl, a Blue Ridge Mountain story by Delia Ray, it is a historical fiction title based on letters from the teacher who was assigned to the Hoover School in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has a strong female protagonist and is filled with quirky characters and interesting historical notes. I'm sure I'll think of others after I send this, but it's been that kind of year- many books that I really enjoyed, too many to choose just one. Genevieve
