Peter Sis' The Tree of Life. I'm not an expert on Darwin, but someone who knows much more tells me this book is spot-on accurate. My students and I love this sort of approach to biography, tons of text and imagery to explore and savor over and over and over. The juxtaposition of art and information is simply exquisite. A brilliant and fascinating book to read and reread.

Candace Fleming's Ben Franklin's Almanac. Another unconventional biography, equally full of text and images to study, read, and reread in any order you wish. Fabulous research, writing, and art. Franklin lived life large and brilliantly so it seems fair that there can never be too many books about him. I also was very pleased with the back matter as there was a clear distinction made between the need to provide sources (in a biography and detailed list of picture sources) and a need to provide kids with ways to explore the subject further (in a short list of "Books About Ben for Young Readers" and a list of "Web Sites about Ben"). I also loved the index. In fact, along with the author I thank the editor and designer for creating this handsome book.

Philip Pullman's Lyra's Oxford. An exquisitely little book containing a story and, as Pullman writes in the beginning, "several other things." For fans of His Dark Materials, this book is a tantalizing trove of possibilities. The story, "Lyra and the Birds" takes place a few years after the events of His Dark Materials and introduces a new and intriguing character. The "other things" are a gorgeous map by John Lawrence, a postcard, and some other ephemera. According to the map, our United States does not exist in Lyra's world although there are some very intriguing sounding places in the Western Hemisphere. It whet my appetit for more stories from Lyra's world.
