Two of my favorite picture books of 2003 haven't yet been mentioned:
Jim Aylesworth's rendition of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, illustrated by Barbara McClintock, and I Kissed the Baby by Mary Murphy.
I'm not sure these two books would have become favorites if it hadn't been for my two-year olds insistence that I read each over and over again. Aylesworth's voice in Goldilocks has such rhythm-such cadence;I feel a genuine storyteller when I read his wo rds aloud. McClintock's illustrations are captivating in their humor and detail.
Perhaps my daughter's love of I Kissed the Baby stems from the fact that she recently became a big sister. She loves to chant the words to her baby brother-giving him a big kissing smack in finale. Equally she loves being the baby when I read the book t o her. The illustrations are so energetic-so full of life. It's a fun book.
As far as favorites for older readers, I, like others, loved Boy Meets Boy by Levithan. Olive's Ocean, by Henkes, is another favorite.
