Caldecott terms and criteria

I haven't served on the Caldecott, but they're ballotting process is the same as the one used for the Newbery, which I have served on. The only specific rule I can think of for eliminating books in this part of the process is that books that get no votes at all after each ballot are out of the running.

The way the balloting itself works:

After a thorough discussion, each of the 15 committee members votes for three books, in ranked order. Every first place vote gets 4 points, second = three points, and third = 2 points. The points are tallied and if one book has received at least 8 first-place votes (a simple majority) and the point spread between it and the next highest vote getter is at least 8 points, the book is declared the winner. If a single book hasn't emerged after the first round of balloting, discussion continues for the remaining books (those that got at least 2 points), and balloting occurs again. And again. And again, if necessary, until one book reaches that 8-vote 8-point status. The actual number of times balloting occurs in any given year is kept confidential.

Most mock committees use the same sort of balloting process, however, they can't always take the time to rediscuss and reballot. I hope that helps to clarify the process.

Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly to my letter with the url for the Caldecott terms and criteria page, which is not quite what i wanted . I've been told the jurty goes through a series of ballots based on very specific rules for eliminating books as they go along. I assumed that people use the same rules when they do their mock?ldecotts. Can someone clarifgy this for me? Thanks, Mordicai Gerstein
