Your favorite books of 2003

Following our December tradition of asking you all to write in with your favorite books of the year, I'd like to turn the discussion over to the CCBC-Net community of readers.

Beth Wright has already mentioned a novel and two picture books that stood out to her as outstanding. She cited "Olive's Ocean" by Kevin Henkes and eloquently told us why she admired it. I'm sure there are others among you who would second Beth's appreciation for the book. Are there other novels for children you feel are especially good this year?

Beth also mentioned two distinctive picture books: "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers" by Mordicai Gerstein and "Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin and Harry Bliss, two excellent books that are quite different from each other and from each author's previous work. What other picture books do you admire?

I think there has been some excellent nonfiction this year, as well. The one that really stands out for me is "Hana's Suitcase" by Karen Levine, originally published in Canada and now published in the U.S. by Albert Whitman. Alternating chapters tell Hana Brady's story from the 1930s and 1940s, and the contemporary story of Fumiko Ishioka, the Japanese Holocaust Museum director who was trying to piece together the details of Hana's life. This device is used very effectively so that the story reads almost like a mystery, as new details come to light. If you haven't read "Hana's Suitcase" yet, I most highly recommend it.

What else has stood out to you this year?
