As always, reading your year-end favorites during CCBC-Net's December discussion is a satisfying combination of "Oh, yes, me too!" and jotting down titles I haven't gotten around to yet.

In addition to many books already named, I enjoyed AFTER THE LAST DOG DIED by Carmen Bredeson (National Geographic). I found it a welcome addition to the recent surge of books about Antarctic exploration, as it offers an alternative to the Shackleton story with a look at the lesser known Antarctic expedition of Australian Douglas Mawson in 1911. Its visual format and tense drama, combined with the relatively short length (62 pages) make this a natural choice for children who relish adventure in an easy, accessible and inviting format.
