Hi. Below please find my list of 2003 books that gave me pause and smiles and even a few gasps.
Picture Books: Here I look for distinguished and special stories told in both pictures and words. I have shared all of these books with children and continue to think of them highly.
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, illustrated by Robert Sabuda (Simon and Schuster)
- The Alphabet Room, written and illustrated by Sara Pinto (Bloomsbury)
- Arnie the Donut written and illustrated by Laurie Keller (Holt)
- Buster, written and illustrated by Denise Fleming (Holt)
- The Day the Babies Crawled Away, written and illustrated by Peggy Rathman
(Putnam)
- The Dot, written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds (Candlewick)
- Mosque, written and illustrated by David Macaulay (Walter Lorraine / Houghton Mifflin)
- What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? By Steve Jenkins and Robin Page
(Houghton Mifflin)
Two picture books I think are great for older children:
- Blues Journey, written by Walter Dean Myers, Illustrated by Christopher Myers (Holiday House)
- The Tree of Life, written and illustrated by Peter Sis (FSG)
Novels: I was most taken by all of these books for their remarkable story and writing. I found each to be distinguished and memorable in their own way.
- The Amulet of Samarkand, The Bartimeaus Trilogy: Book One by Jonathan Stroud
- An American Plague by Jim Murphy (Clarion)
- The Canning Season by Polly Horvath (FSG)
- The Conch Bearer by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (Roaring Brook Press)
- How Angel Peterson Got His Name and Other Outrageous Tales by Gary Paulsen
(Wendy Lamb / Random House)
- In Defense of Liberty: The Story of America's Bill of Rights by Russell Freedman (Holiday House)
- Keeper of the Night by Kimberley Willis Holt (Holt)
- The Meanest Doll in the World, written by Ann Martin and Laura Godwin, illustrated by Brian Selznick (Hyperion)
- The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo (Candlewick)
It was a wonderful year in books. I'm sure I left some off, but these titles have stood out for me.
Peace to all.
Nick
