Certainly a classic coming of age novel is To Kill a Mockingbird in which Scout Finch is only 6 years old when the events concerning her relationship to her community start occurring. Of course this novel has many other aspects, but the fact that this novel was published many years ago shows that it's not necessarily that children today are experiencing more experiences forcing them to grow up earlier, although they may be reading about them at a younger age.
