One of my recent favorite coming of age stories is Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes. I was struck by the author's ability to give such a realistic perspective into an adolescent girl's mind. The subtle plot and summer-y mood to the story created the perfect backdrop for the main character's development over the course of a school break. I think this book was especially effective in the way that the character was just bridging the age gap between being a child and becoming a woman. And, I was moved by her inner conflicts dealing with life and death, family and friends, and heartbreaking boyish pranks.
