One coming of age novel that comes to mind for me is Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas. The protagonist's discovery of love, sex, and heartbreak is quite moving. And his understanding of the parent's true role in his life adds to the "growing up" of the character. You know that by the end of the novel he is truly becoming an adult. The strength of the novel is in the voice, it never strays from sounding authentic.
