Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier is an exemplary coming of age story for teens. In this novel, seventeen-year-old Dimple, who has never felt comfortable with herself, hides behind her camera lens. Her family is from India, but she has grown up in New Jersey. In the beginning of the story, she longs to have the body of her model-like best friend and rejects all of her parent's attempts to teach her to be a proper Indian woman. However, as the novel progresses, she falls in love with an enigmatic Indian teen who seems to navigate easily between both worlds, and her own world begins to expand. Through this journey, Dimple finds learns to find her voice and trust her talents. She also learns to see her parents as people who had their own hopes and dreams, and they begin to respect her identity.

I could not put this book down, and I think teens will love it, too.
