coming of age books -- girls/multi-culture

I?ve enjoyed reading everyone?s favorite and recommended titles of books about kids coming of age. I wanted to take a quick second to point to two anthologies that touch on this topic:
Kristin Litchman? and my book, Period Pieces: Stories for Girls
(HarperCollins Children?s Books), which deals with girls? coming of age stories in a diverse array of cultures, locations, histories. With the authors of the stories: Rita Williams-Garcia, Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, Uma Krishnaswami, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Linda Sue Park, Bobbi Katz, Dian Curtis Regan, Jane Kurtz, Johanna Hurwitz, April Halprin Wayland, Kristin Litchman, and myself, we aimed to give readers a good read as well as a worthwhile read with stories that touched them in some way
(always the goal!). All the stories are about coming of age, most are multi?ceted (ie, not just about the girl getting her period, but about that next step into the blurry definition of adulthood, or ?growing up?). The book?s characters are 10 and up; the book itself is geared to people 8 and up.
Another book that?s just out in the US is Lines in the Sand: New Writing on War & Peace (The Disinformation Company). This is a collection of stories that deals with coming of age in a big, global way, if-you-will, in the shadow of conflict. Read ?For Carlos: A Letter from Your Father? by UK Children?s Laureate Michael Morpurgo and you can?t escape the impact the story has on Carlos, nor the reader. Or Ann Jacobus Kordahl?s story, ?In Her Hand,? which takes a young girl to the Normandy beaches. Or David Almond?s story, ?Dad?s Hat,? reflecting on how war can continue long after the guns have stopped. ?These aren?t hit-you-over-the-head stories about coming of age, but subtle jogs in memory, flashes in the crystal ball of words, of what it?s all about.
