The theme of community is strong in the YA novel Mahalia, by Joanne Horniman. The teen dad in the book raises his baby daughter Mahalia with the help of his roommates, neighbors, friends, and friendly strangers. The right person or situation always seems to turn up just as the protagonist is about to fail on his own. A hopeful book I enjoyed very much.
