What is community? It is the people and the place. These two books embody the theme of community.

The book that seems to be an endless well of inspiration for the theme of community is BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE by Kate DiCamillo. (Candlewick 2000) Disparate individuals in a small Florida town -a pet store worker with a mysterious past, a recovering alcoholic recluse, a melancholy librarian, a preacher and his daughter who is missing something in her soul are brought together by a homeless dog who looks like an old rug, smells like a wet one and suffers from severe separation anxiety and fear. Without being sloppily sentimental ten-year-old India Opal Buloni tells her tale of finding a home in this neighborhood of friends.

A new bilingual picture book THE TREASURE ON GOLD STREET/EL TESORA EN LA CALLE ORO by Lee Merrill Byrd illustrations by Antonio Castro L.
(Cinco Puntos, 2003)translated by Sharon Franco. A developmentally delayed adult, Isabel has been friend to more than one generation of neighbors on Gold Street. Isabel strolls with her mother, Mrs. Favela who everyone calls Bennie. As they walk hand-in-hand they visit with the neighbors, Isabel tells of her breakfast of burritos with huevos and chorizo, sometimes in Spanish, sometimes in English because she speaks both. The narrator a young girl, Hannah relates matter-of?ctly "I love Isabel because she is big like a grown-up but she plays with me like a friend. Momma says that when she was growing up that was why she liked Isabel too." The illustrations are created of photo-realistic images of people and objects of layered with cartoony houses, cars, and pets. The Spanish / English text is laid facing the art on yellowed paper taped to a doodled colored background as if we are entering a scrapbook of memories. We enter this community and meet its residents without condescension and with much understanding and love.
