school as community -- not always rosy

Can we say that most school stories, especially YA novels with school backdrops, are Community Stories? Are we only discussing books where communities "WORK" or are we examining how communities are examined via stories?

THE CHOCOLATE WAR examines how a community malfunctions in the hands of a few power-hungered players.

SPEAK looks at how a community is neglecting and ostracizing one of its members.

FRICTION (E.R. Frank's new novel) explores how a stable community (the school) can be disturbed and shattered by one unstable new element.

BRIMSTONE DIARIES tells how members of one community can alter the fate of the collective whole.
