Paul Fleischman must enjoy writing about community, as the story you've described, Beth, is similar to his picture book (illustrated by Kevin Hawkes) called Weslandia. Weslandia is one of my favorites, and it begins with a boy who is chased by his schoolmates. But over the summer when a new species of plant begins growing in his backyard, he creates an entire culture based on this plant and it's resources (games, clothes, cuisine). In the end a community builds up around his culture with all of the people who teased him before! A delightful read, and I think an interesting twist--giving one boy the power to create a new community, when he is shunned by his own. His community of one attracts the crowd.
