I just finished reading (at the recommendation of our local high school librarian) David Klass's You Don't Know Me, the troubling story of John, who is a part of no other community than that of his school. How students, teachers and administration do and don't come to "know" John makes for compelling reading for teen-agers especially, but also for the adults who care about them.
Thinking back over my own writing, I remember that in the Winter 2001 02 issue of Riverbank Review, Krystyna Poray Goddu commented about Hannah's Bookmobile Christmas, "The spirit of a community that has been forged through a shared love of books pervades the text." I am especially proud that the text and art have been commended for having, as part of that community, a young library patron in a wheel chair. There are many ways for a community to be "inclusive." I'm enjoying the conversation. Sally Derby
