Just a reminder to any of you on CCBC-Net who want to respond to this message, please respond directly to Sari Miller, and not the list as a whole.
I know we've wandered a bit off-topic in our first week of discussion this month with the sad news of William Steig's death and with the happy news of Angela Johnson and Peter Sis being named MacArthur fellows, but we'll try to get things back on track now and continue our discussion of Community in Children's and Young Adult Literature.
Interestingly, I think both Angela Johnson and Peter Sis have written some excellent books on the theme. We've already mentioned the Madlenka books by Peter Sis. I'd also like to mention some of Angela Johnson's books that fit our theme: "Heaven" and "The Other Side: Shorter Poems." Both deal with community in small towns, one in Heaven, Ohio, and the other in Shorter, Alabama.

I am scheduled to give a talk in Cleveland, Ohio to the annual conference of the Ohio Library Council this November. My intention is to talk of my take on what children's book publishers are interested in publishing today -- that is, why they choose to publish what they do. Admittedly, I am not an acknowleged expert on the subject, but I do have many observations drawn from acceptance/rejection letters and talks with editors to give me various insights. My request to all of you is this
-- if you were attending the meeting, what specific questions would you hope I would address? Would you be interested in attending such a talk, or would you be more interested in a presentation based on my past and forth-coming boioks? Thanks in adavance for your comments. Sally Derby
