Just wanted to mention how much I love this subject header: "community, Maniac, neighbors." Part of the reason I love kid lit so much...
cheers, Mark

This October, Maniac Magee is the featured book of the month at my alma mater, JHS 192 in Queens, New York. A poster of a student reading the book is displayed prominently as you enter the school. The Princi pal and Assistant Principal wants everyone to know that literacy, excellence and community are key values of this once gang-ridden (during my attendance) school. Therefore, everyone at 192, from students, teachers, custodians, security patrol, cafeteria staff, is reading Maniac Magee and discussing it. It is really quite exciting and a unifying thread of this small community.
