Book Discussion Opportunities

CCBC Monthly Book Discussions provide interested adults with the opportunity to talk about newly published books for children and young adults. Thediscussions are held Friday afternoons, 3:30 - 5:30, at the CCBC. Any adult who has read at least one or two books on the current month's list is welcome. Upcoming discussion dates are October 17 and November 21.

The CCBC's Annual Award Discussions for the Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King and Printz awards will be held from 5:10-9:10 p.m. at the CCBC,Room 4290 Helen C. White Hall, 600 N. Park Street, on the UW-Madison campus on the following dates:

  Coretta Scott King: Wednesday, November 19
  Printz: Tuesday, December 2
  Caldecott: Thursday, December 11
  Newbery: Monday, December 15

CCBC award discussion are open to any interested adult. Participants read and discuss a selection of books eligible for each award. The reading lists are compiled by the CCBC staff and will be posted on the CCBC web site at least one month in advance of each discussion. The lists do not reflect the nominations of any of the actual award committees. Check www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/new.htm throughout the fall for the discussion lists.

Continuing Education Opportunities

What's New in Children's Books is an online class being taught October 20-November 14 by CCBC Librarians Kathleen T. Horning, Merri V. Lindgren and Megan Schliesman. This course will examine recent trends in literature from birth through age 12, focusing on books published since 1999. New authors and illustrators, multicultural literature, awards and distinctions, and current issues in book evaluation and selectino will be highlighted. There are no graded papers or exams. This class is offered through the Continuing Education Services of the UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies. Fee: $69. Contact SLIS/CES
