It's been a few years since I read it, but I had a very negative reaction to Madlenka. Europeans came from particular nations whose cultures were assumed to be familiar to us and/or worth knowing about. Non-Europeans (with the partial exception of Indians) were treated as representatives of whole continents and were embedded more in nature than in cultures.
I'm hazy on the details because I haven't picked up the book since that first time, but I think that anyone inclined to use the book should look it over with a critical eye first.
