Vacant lot memories

When I was growing up on the Southwest Side of Chicago in the early 1960's we called vacant lots "prairie" -- as in: "Let's go play in the prairie with the billboard over on 63rd street." My dad remembers calling them that, also, in the 1930's. Must be a vestige of Chicago's past.
