THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME was published here as an adult book (and chosen as the July choice for the NBC"Today" program book club). I've definitely read the novel and would classify it as a crossover book; ie, suitable for YAs. I believe Haddon's book was originally published in the UK. Nonetheless, the novel was published for both markets, adult and YA. Most recently, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize 2003. See:

As regards to THE CURIOS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, originally I stopped and gave pause to this novel portraying community. However, upon further reflection, the 15-year-old's first person narrative certainly does convey, not only the community that exists to support this autistic YA
(which the reader is led to put together from comments made about others), but how this individual perceives community. The ultimate question would be: Does that type of filtering (splintering) of community by the narrator truly constitute community?

Karen Sue...now reading BOY MEETS BOY...which also offers a view of community....
