I just booktalked "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" to two 8th grade classes at a local school. After the talk a girl came up quickly to place a hold on it and the teacher said she'd probably buy a classroom copy with grant money the teachers had received for classroom libraries. That made me very glad I'd chosen the book to talk about. It is wonderful
- for Christopher himself and for those around him. When I talked about the book I showed the page with the smiley and frowny faces and explained how Christopher needed to have a teacher help to teach him about emotions. I think the idea of someone being dependent on others for something so basic, along with Christopher's desire to be independent and solve the puzzle of the dog's death, really resonates with young adults.
