Owl Moon: A Classic Revisited at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. John Schoenherr won the Caldecott Medal in 1988 for his illustrations in Owl Moon, a modern classic of children's literature written by Jane Yolen. All sixteen of the original pen-and-ink and watercolor washed drawings that Schoenherr drew to create his special nighttime world will be on view to celebrate the book's 15th anniversary. Shoenherr will be at the museum on Saturday, September 6 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Information: 715?5p10 or www.lywam.org
A Long Way From Chicago is this year's Marathon County READS selection. Richard Peck will kick off a month-long series of events for Marathon County READS with a free public lecture at the Grand Theater in Wausau, Wisconsin on September 21, at 1:00 p.m. A reception at the Marathon County Public Library will follow at 4:00 p.m. For questions, please contact Gary Gisselman glgiss at mcpl.lib.wi.us or phone 715&1r05.
Children's Book Magic: David Diaz and Robert Sabuda November 15 through February 1, 2004 at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin The joy and wonder of reading are paired with amazing feats of artistry and engineering in the 120 works comprising Children's Book Magic. From David Diaz's layered collages that colorfully interpret historical figures and contemporary issues to the amazing pop-up art of paper engineer Robert Sabuda, viewers will be challenged to look at art, books, and literature in new and exciting ways from both 2-D and 3-D perspectives. Sabuda will visit Wausau on November 15 and 16, 2003. Diaz will be in Wausau January 24 and 25. Marathon County Public Library and Wisconsin Valley Library Service are collaborating to bring literacy events to library, school and museum audiences.
