Trying to locate the name and author of a book!?!

We are trying to locate a book my husband read in his youth. The book is about a man who has a dream that he has lost his head. He then tries various objects to replace his head. He finally settles on a parsnip. Another character in the book punches him in the parsnip thus ending the dream and waking him up. If anyone can please help us locate this book we would be extremely grateful. Thank you, Brian and Marilyn
